  • Structure and Classification

    Monolithic casting type: manufactured as a single piece from high‑strength gray cast iron or chromium‑alloyed cast iron. It features a simple structure, ease of machining, and a large thermal capacity, but it is relatively heavy and is commonly used in medium- and heavy-duty vehicles.

    Steel–cast iron composite: This type consists of a stamped steel drum hub and a cast‑iron drum rim joined as a single unit, resulting in a lighter weight; it is commonly used in passenger cars and light vehicles.

    Light-alloy–cast-iron composite: The main body is made of a light alloy, such as aluminum alloy, with an internal cast-iron liner. This design not only reduces weight but also provides excellent heat dissipation, making it widely used in passenger cars.

    Materials and Manufacturing

    Brake drums are typically manufactured from gray cast iron, such as grades HT200 and HT300. Their matrix microstructure is predominantly pearlitic, with minor amounts of ferrite and cementite. The graphite is mainly in the A‑grade morphology, appearing as long, flaky shapes. Casting is the conventional manufacturing process; to enhance performance, alloying elements like copper (Cu) and chromium (Cr) are often added.

    Working principle

    When the driver presses the brake pedal, the hydraulic fluid pressure in the wheel cylinder rises, pushing the piston outward. The piston then drives the brake shoes on both sides to swing outward around their pivot points, bringing the friction linings on the shoes progressively closer to and into firm contact with the inner surface of the rotating brake drum, thereby generating frictional force. This frictional force exerts a braking torque opposite to the direction of rotation, slowing down the brake drum and, in turn, decelerating or stopping the wheel. When the brake pedal is released, the wheel cylinder piston returns to its original position, and the brake shoes retract inward under the tension of the return springs, separating the friction linings from the inner surface of the brake drum and releasing the brake.

    Features

    When delivering the same braking torque, it features a smaller brake disc diameter compared to disc brakes, making it well suited for large trucks, buses, and other vehicles where hub space is limited yet extremely high braking torque is required. It boasts a simple structure, low manufacturing costs, and easy integration of a parking‑brake mechanism. Additionally, it provides automatic self‑energizing, enabling superior braking performance with lower hydraulic pressure or a smaller brake drum.
