I. Core Structure and Function
Basic Structure
The brake drum is a cylindrical component made of cast iron, fixed to the wheel and rotating synchronously with it. The inner wall serves as the friction contact surface. Its closed design effectively prevents dust and oil from entering, enhancing safety.
Linkage Components
Brake Pad: An arc-shaped metal piece with friction plates, which expands outward when hydraulically pushed to fit the brake drum;
Brake Wheel Cylinder: Converts hydraulic brake fluid pressure into mechanical thrust to drive the brake pad to move;
Spring System: Positioning spring prevents displacement, and reset spring ensures that the brake pad separates in time.II. Working Principle
Braking process:
When the brake is depressed, hydraulic pressure pushes the piston of the wheel cylinder. The brake shoe expands against the spring force, and the friction plate presses against the inner wall of the rotating brake drum. Through friction, the kinetic energy is converted into heat energy to bring the vehicle to a stop.
Self-enhancement effect:
Due to the influence of the rotation direction, the leading shoe (the brake shoe before the rotation direction) is subjected to the dual effects of friction and hydraulic pressure. The braking force can reach 2-2.5 times that of the shoe.III. Key Supporting Institutions
Automatic gap adjustment
Through the ratchet screw mechanism, wear is detected in real time, and the length of the adjusting rod is automatically shortened to maintain a constant gap between the shoe and the drum, ensuring the efficiency of the braking response.
Parking brake system
When the handbrake is pulled, the steel cable directly pulls the expansion mechanism of the brake shoe, locking the wheels independently of the hydraulic system.
